Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday said Bangladesh has learned to face and adapt to natural calamities.
“We have learned to adapt,” she said.
She said this when President of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies Kate Forbes called on her at her office in Sangsad Bhaban.
PM’s Deputy Press Secretary Noorelahi Mina briefed the reporters after the call on.
Hasina said that Bangladesh is a country of cyclones and floods and she thanked Red Crescent for their support to tackle these natural calamities.
She recalled her life in captivity during the Liberation War and refugee life after the assassination of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1975.
“I know the pain and misery of the refugees and for that reason we have given humanitarian assistance to them (Rohingyas),” she said.
She said that in Bhashanchar the government has prepared better shelters with improved facilities for the Rohingya people.
“We are giving whatever possible for us to them,” she said.
Sheikh Hasina thanked the Red Crescent for their activities in Bangladesh.
She also recognised Red Crescent’s role and activities in Bangladesh during the Liberation War.
Kate Forbes appreciated Sheikh Hasina’s leadership.
She recalled the role and activities of Red Crescent in 1971 during the Liberation War of the country.
She mentioned that Red Crescent Society is working with the Bangladesh government very sincerely and getting cooperation and assistance from the government.
Forbes highly praised humanitarian kindness of Sheikh Hasina for the forcibly displaced Rohingyas and providing shelter to them in Bangladesh.
“This is an example of humanitarian attitude,” she said.
She said that they have visited Rohingya camps and assured the continuation of their assistance in this regard.
She mentioned that Bangladesh has became an example in tackling natural calamities.
Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary M Tofazzel Hossain Miah was, among others, present at the meeting.
