Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Wednesday underscored the imperative of military preparedness in a world he described as increasingly encircled by the threat of war.

“Like many others, I stand firmly against any war,” he told members of the Bangladesh Air Force during a visit to Air Force Base Bir Uttam AK Khandaker. “Yet we live in a world where the spectre of war constantly looms.”

In an apparent reference to heightened regional tensions, Yunus alluded to the situation between India and Pakistan, citing media reports that have portrayed a war-like atmosphere. Against this backdrop, he argued that it would be “suicidal” to remain unprepared.

While observing an Air Force exercise, the Chief Adviser acknowledged the high cost of war but insisted that strategic readiness must not be neglected. “War is always an expensive affair,” he said, “but our efforts to raise the level of preparedness must not falter.”

Yunus’s remarks appeared to balance his pacifist stance with a sober assessment of geopolitical realities, signalling the need for both peace advocacy and prudent defence planning.
