President Mohammed Shahabuddin has ordered an investigation into allegations against several Supreme Court judges, according to a statement issued by the Supreme Court administration on Monday (6 January).

The president issued the directive in accordance with Article 96 of the Constitution. However, the exact number of judges to be investigated has not yet been disclosed.

The Supreme Judicial Council, headed by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, had previously conducted a preliminary inquiry into the conduct of several judges and submitted a report to the President on 15 December.

Earlier, on 4 December, the Supreme Court announced that the council was already conducting a preliminary investigation into the behaviour of some judges from the higher judiciary, reporting significant progress in the process. It was also revealed that a letter regarding the matter had been sent from Bangabhaban to the Supreme Court.

Following the letter, the Supreme Judicial Council will proceed with a detailed investigation into the accused judges.
