Bail hearing for Dr Khondaker Golam Sabbir Ahmed, a resident of Trishal Upazila in Mymensingh and a convict sentenced to life imprisonment for crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War, has been postponed to 12 December.

The decision was announced on Tuesday (3 December), by a three-member bench of the Supreme Court led by Chief Justice Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed.

The defence for the convict was represented by Advocate SM Shahjahan, while Prosecutor Gazi MH Tanim appeared on behalf of the prosecution.

Due to the absence of the Chief Prosecutor, the bench deferred the hearing to mid-December.

On 20 February 2023, the International Crimes Tribunal sentenced Dr Golam Sabbir and four others—Md Hormuz Ali, Fakhruzzaman, Abdus Sattar, and Khondaker Golam Rabbani—to life imprisonment for their roles in crimes against humanity during the Liberation War. Subsequently, the convicts filed appeals within the legally stipulated period of one month.

Earlier, on 10 October 2023, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, led by a six-member bench under Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan, dismissed the bail petitions of Dr Golam Sabbir and Abdus Sattar.

The case originated on 19 May 2015, when Rahima Khatun, the wife of Shaheed Mukti Bahini Commander Abdur Rahman, filed charges against then-Member of Parliament MA Hannan and two others for crimes against humanity.

The investigation later implicated five more individuals, bringing the total number of accused to eight.

On 11 December 2016, the International Crimes Tribunal formally accepted charges against all eight defendants.

The trial commenced on 27 May 2019. The charges specified that the accused committed crimes in Trishal Upazila from 21 April to 10 December 1971, including acts of murder, abduction, and torture.
