Parents have joined students in the protest called by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement to press home their 9-point demand.
On Saturday morning (3 August), parents began joining the students in their protest outside East West University in Aftabnagar, Dhaka.
While students had been occupying the area since 11:30am, they officially started the protest at 11:50am. At this time, thousands of students began chanting slogans to press their nine-point demands. During the protest, more than fifty police officers were seen stationed at the main gate of Aftabnagar.
One parent, who preferred to remain anonymous, stated that they joined the protest out of concern for the safe future of their child and all children in Bangladesh. "We did not come here to benefit any political party. We are here demanding justice," they said.
They also urged parents across the country to join the protests and demand justice.
Meanwhile, a significant presence of law enforcement personnel was observed to control the situation.
Badda Police Station's Officer-in-Charge, Abu Salam, said, "We have spoken with the university authorities and the protesting students. We asked them why they are carrying sticks. We explained that the equipment in the hands of the police is for their safety. We advised them to put down the sticks. We were tolerant yesterday, and we will remain even more tolerant today. The protesters assured us that they will carry out their programme peacefully."
