A case has been filed against former Dhaka South City Corporation mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh and 29 others over allegations of intentionally setting fire to the capital’s Bangabazar market in April last year.

A case has been filed against former Dhaka South City Corporation mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh and 29 others over allegations of intentionally setting fire to the capital’s Bangabazar market in April last year. 

Kamal Hossain Ripon, a Mirpur resident, filed the case with the Shahbagh Police Station on Friday (22 November). 

In the case statement, it is alleged that the fire incurred damages worth Tk500 crore.

On Saturday, the police forwarded its report to the court.

Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, Dhaka South City Corporation Chief Executive Officer Mizanur Rahman, former MP Afzal Hossain, former ward councillor Farid Uddin Ratan, and some local Awami League leaders were made accused in the case, among others. 

It alleges that the accused were behind the plot to set fire to the market.

The devastating fire broke out at the capital’s Bangabazar market on 4 April 2023.
