A Dhaka tribunal has withdrawn the arrest warrant against BNP’s acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, in the 21 August grenade attack case, following a petition from the prosecution.

The order was issued on Monday (17 February) by Judge Rafiqul Islam of Dhaka’s Speedy Trial Tribunal-1, acting upon the prosecution’s request.

Previously, on 1 December, the High Court bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayetur Rahim acquitted all defendants in the case.

Special Public Prosecutor Abdur Rashid Molla of Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 stated that several of the acquitted defendants, including Tarique Rahman, had been fugitives.

With the High Court verdict exonerating them, the tribunal consequently ordered the withdrawal of their pre-existing arrest warrants.

He further explained that once the High Court’s ruling reached the trial court, the prosecution filed a petition seeking the revocation of arrest warrants against Tarique Rahman and others, which the court duly granted.
