With a ruling on Thursday (20 March) that acquitted BNP’s acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, along with seven others, in a bribery case related to granting exemption from a murder charge, no cases remain pending against him in the trial courts.
According to BNP’s legal representatives, there are now no legal barriers preventing his return to Bangladesh and active participation in politics.
As per the charge sheet, an allegation was made that a bribe of Tk21 crore was exchanged to secure exemption for Safiat Sobhan Sanvir, an accused in the murder case of Bashundhara Group’s director, Sabbir.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) had initiated the case in this regard.
BNP’s lawyer, Borhan Uddin, informed journalists that the ACC failed to present any substantial evidence or witnesses against the accused.
Consequently, the court acquitted all defendants, including Tarique Rahman.
With this verdict, all legal proceedings against Tarique Rahman in Bangladesh’s judicial courts have come to an end.
BNP’s legal team asserts that he can now return to the country and resume his political activities without any legal impediments.
