BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman has extended Eid-ul-Fitr greetings to the nation.
On the evening of Sunday (30 March), he posted a message on his verified Facebook account conveying his wishes.
Alongside the greeting, he shared a family photograph featuring the former prime minister and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, his daughter Jaima Rahman, and his wife Zubaida Rahman.
For the first time in seven years, the family of former president and BNP founder Ziaur Rahman is celebrating Eid together in a different setting.
Since 2017, Khaleda Zia had not spent the occasion with her eldest son, daughter-in-law, and beloved granddaughters.
After spending Eid behind bars in 2018, and later confined to her Gulshan residence due to illness, she had remained separated from parts of her family.
In his message, Tarique Rahman extended heartfelt Eid greetings to the people of Bangladesh and Muslims worldwide.
He stated that for 17 years, the oppressed people of Bangladesh had longed for an Eid in a truly independent and democratic nation, free from repression and fear.
According to him, that aspiration was realised in 2024 through a historic mass uprising that claimed over 2,000 lives but broke the chains of autocracy.
He urged the people to share Eid’s joy with all segments of society, particularly disadvantaged children, and called for acts of kindness towards the less fortunate. He also appealed to transport operators to refrain from imposing excessive fares to ensure that families could reunite without hardship.
Warning of lingering threats to stability, he called for vigilance against those seeking to disrupt the hard-earned peace.
He urged law enforcement agencies to maintain strict security measures during Eid, preventing any attempts to destabilise public life.
Closing his message, Tarique Rahman expressed hope that this Eid, the first in a truly free Bangladesh, would be one of peace, unity, and shared happiness.
