On the occasion of the 1971 Liberation War's commemoration, BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman issued a call for preserving the democratic system, urging citizens to protect the values for which the nation fought so bravely.

In a statement released on Tuesday (25 March), Rahman lamented that anti-democratic forces continue their conspiracies to derail the country’s progress, both politically and economically.

In his message, Tarique Rahman paid heartfelt tributes to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the country’s freedom.

He emphasised the contribution of the nation's brave leaders, including late president Ziaur Rahman, whose declaration of independence illuminated the path for the nation during its darkest hours.

"The struggle for independence was long and hard, but through the sacrifices of countless patriots, including the valiant freedom fighters, we attained victory," Tarique Rahman said.

He remembered the selfless contributions of the mothers and sisters who bore the harshest burdens in the quest for freedom.

He also stressed that, while the nation faces numerous challenges, the essence of Bangladesh’s victory in the Liberation War — a commitment to human equality, democratic ideals, and independence — must be safeguarded at all costs.

Tarique Rahman added that this day marks the beginning of a new era, with Bangladesh's victory symbolizing not just national pride, but a universal desire for justice and dignity.

Alongside Tarique Rahman, BNP Secretary-General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also delivered a message, paying tribute to the late president Ziaur Rahman, calling him the "hero of liberation."

Fakhrul recalled the historic call to arms that led to the nation’s victory in 1971, acknowledging Zia's leadership in the formation of the Z-Force, and emphasised that his sacrifice remains pivotal to the ongoing struggle for the country’s sovereignty and democracy.
