Law enforcers resorted to baton charges, water cannons, and sound grenades to disperse a group of teachers staging a protest at Shahbagh, Dhaka.
The demonstrators were voicing their grievances over the cancellation of their appointments as assistant teachers in government primary schools.
According to eyewitness accounts and photographic evidence from the scene, protesters began assembling at the Shahbagh intersection around 11am on Monday (10 February).
The demonstration quickly escalated as police intervened to disperse the crowd.
In an official statement, the protesters highlighted that the recruitment process had been conducted in three distinct phases.
While appointments were successfully made in the first and second phases, the third phase has been left unresolved, leaving thousands in uncertainty.
“A total of 6,531 candidates were included in the final merit list but have yet to receive their appointments. We urge the authorities to resolve this issue immediately,” the statement read.
The cancellation of these appointments has sparked considerable discontent among the affected candidates, who continue to demand swift action from the government to rectify the situation.
