BNP's Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has called on party members to remain alert and conscious, warning that the upcoming election will not be easy for the party.
Speaking virtually as the chief guest at the 89th birth anniversary celebration of BNP founder and former president Ziaur Rahman, Tarique emphasised the importance of unity within the party. "We have to be aware and conscious. The election ahead will not be easy for us. If we make any mistakes, the people won’t support us. Then we will be forced to retreat," he said.
"We must be united and stand by the side of the people," he added.
Tarique emphasised that the right to vote is the only means to ensure accountability. "If we can create accountability at every level of government and society, we will gradually move forward. If the government is compelled to be accountable to the people for each of its actions, the people’s suffering and desires will be reflected through the government’s work."
Tarique also stated that for Bangladesh to evolve into a democratic nation, establishing the right to vote is essential. "People must be able to enjoy all kinds of benefits and security. Unity is key; after a certain time, arrangements must be made to ensure that elections are held according to the law. Once accountability is ensured, people's rights can be established," he added.
He encouraged political leaders and workers to follow the example set by the late President Ziaur Rahman, who had a strong connection with the people. "Just as Ziaur Rahman presented himself to the people, every political leader and worker should develop themselves," he advised.
Tarique expressed confidence that the BNP has the potential to form the government in a free and fair election. He raised the question of whether the country and the nation would benefit if another party were to form the government. "If someone else forms the government, it will not be good for the country or the nation," he said.
Referring to the party’s struggles, Tarique Rahman mentioned that there are cases against 6 million BNP leaders and activists, with many having suffered during protests. "During the July-August movement alone, nearly 500 party activists were martyred, and thousands more were injured," he noted.
