At least five people were killed when an "apparently out-of-control" bus collided with multiple vehicles at the Dhaleshwari toll plaza on the Dhaka-Mawa expressway in Keraniganj.

The tragic incident, captured on CCTV, occurred at 11:06am on Friday (27 December).

The collision involved a Bepari Paribahan bus, which crushed a car, ran over a motorcycle, and rear-ended a microbus, leaving the vehicles mangled.

"Efforts were underway to clear the damaged vehicles and restore traffic flow on the busy expressway," said Hasara Highway Police Officer-in-Charge Abdur Kader Jilani.

According to footage from the toll plaza, the car, motorcycle, and microbus were queued when the bus first struck the car, completely crushing it, before ploughing into the other vehicles.

"One of the car's passengers died at the scene, while four others succumbed to their injuries en route to Dhaka for hospitalisation," said Sreenagar fire service station official Dewan Azad.

The identities of the victims are yet to be ascertained, and officials warned that the death toll could rise.

The cause of the accident remains unclear.

Highway police and fire service officials could not confirm why the bus driver failed to slow down or apply the brakes as the vehicle approached the toll plaza.

Further investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances leading to this devastating accident.
