Commenting that peace has prevailed in the country following the removal of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, BNP’s Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas asserted that Bangladesh must now strive to become an "Awami League-free" nation, as he claims the party and democracy cannot coexist.

Speaking at a protest rally held at the Engineers' Institution in Ramna, Dhaka, on Monday (28 October), Mirza Abbas stated, “Even though Sheikh Hasina has fled, her cohorts remain within the country. Bangladesh cannot progress if these collaborators persist, as they continue to engage in conspiracies.”

He went on to add that if Jamaat and the BNP unite and work in tandem, it would prevent the Awami League from ever reclaiming power.

Urging for a concerted BNP-Jamaat effort in the interest of the nation, he said, “Awami League is gone, and we find satisfaction in contemplating this; however, there is no reason for complacency. Their agents remain embedded within every facet of Bangladesh’s political, cultural, bureaucratic, and law enforcement structures—including the secretariat, police, and military.”

Mirza Abbas also claimed that the Awami League has not abandoned its schemes, stating, “They are devising systems to control us through various means. Today, one theory emerges, tomorrow another. These theories, regrettably, sometimes even emanate from our own mouths.”

Additionally, BNP chairperson’s adviser, Abdus Salam, remarked that the momentum of the uprising aimed at defeating fascism is currently waning for various reasons.

“To prevent the political rehabilitation of the 14-party alliance in Bangladesh, a national unity must be established, which necessitates strengthening the BNP-Jamaat partnership,” he said.

Salam further noted, “Differences may exist between Jamaat and BNP on various grounds; however, to counter fascism, we must stand together. Both parties need to remain united, before and after the elections.”
