Law Affairs Adviser Dr. Asif Nazrul announced on Sunday that the law ministry has recommended the withdrawal of 7,184 politically-motivated cases filed during the previous government's tenure.

Speaking at a press conference at the ministry’s conference room, Dr Nazrul noted that not all cases labeled as politically-motivated truly fit the definition, and attempts are often made to include unrelated names. “Officials from both the law and home ministries are carefully reviewing these cases. I assure you, they are working with utmost sincerity,” he said.

Addressing the case of model Meghna, Dr Nazrul acknowledged that while allegations against her are under investigation, her arrest procedure was flawed. “The home ministry will take appropriate action after a thorough review,” he added.

Turning to national security, he stated that extensive measures are in place across the country for the upcoming Pahela Baishakh celebrations, as confirmed by the Director General of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).

Dr Nazrul also spoke about the Bangladesh Bank cyber heist, revealing that a review committee, which he heads, has been formed to investigate the incident. The committee includes the central bank governor and other officials.

“There was an attempt to steal $2 billion from the bank — it was essentially a plan to plunder Bangladesh,” he said. “Had it succeeded, the nation could have faced famine.”

He further alleged that the previous government delayed the investigation and that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had been instructed to omit the names of implicated bank officials from its report. “I’ve looked into the actions taken against those initially named, and follow-up directives have now been issued,” he concluded.
