Gono Bhaban is set to be transformed into a museum to commemorate the July mass uprising and depict the enforced disappearances, killings, and oppression that occurred over the last 16 years of Awami League regime, Post and Telecommunications Adviser Nahid Islam announced during a visit to Gono Bhaban this morning.

“We gained a new Bangladesh on 5 August at the cost of bloodshed. To honour the people’s victory, Gono Bhaban will be converted into a museum, preserving its current state of destruction, and it will be open to the public,” Nahid said.

He emphasized that the museum will serve as a global example of the consequences faced by fascist, autocratic, and murderous rulers, and will underscore the principle that the people are the true owners of state power.

The museum will feature a comprehensive display of the last 16 years, including enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and a timeline of the 36-day mass uprising. It will also include a list of martyrs and their memories, along with digital presentations.

Nahid stated that officials have been instructed to complete the museum as quickly as possible.

“We have taken initial suggestions from the concerned officials from the Department of Architecture, Ministry of Housing & Public Works, and shared our vision for how we want the museum to look,” he said.

“The museum will be constructed while carefully preserving the current state of Gono Bhaban, ensuring that the signs of destruction and the people’s outburst remain intact,” Nahid added.

Adviser to the Ministry of Industries Adilur Rahman Khan and Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud accompanied Nahid during the visit.
