The interim government's adviser Nahid Islam has announced plans for an independent media commission and pledged reforms to cybersecurity laws, while also committing to resolving the long-standing Sagar-Runi murder case.

In a bid to ensure media freedom in Bangladesh, the newly appointed information and broadcasting adviser to the interim government Md Nahid Islam has expressed his intention to establish an independent media commission. 

Nahid Islam outlined his vision for a more autonomous press during a consultation meeting with ministry officials on Sunday (18 August).

Responding to queries from the media, Nahid emphasised the government's commitment to fostering an independent media environment.

He stated that any comprehensive measures would be developed in close consultation with the journalistic community. 

Additionally, he assured that the Cybersecurity Act would be revisited, and the Censor Board would undergo a restructuring process.

Moreover, Nahid pledged to expedite the resolution of the murder case of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi, promising that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.

He also sought the assistance of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to reopen the investigation into this high-profile case.
