The commemoration ceremony for the martyrs of the recent public uprising, scheduled for 14 September, has been postponed due to the absence of a complete list of those martyred, said Nahid Islam, adviser to the Ministries of Posts, Telecommunications, ICT, and Information.

During a press briefing at the Secretariat on Thursday (12 September) Nahid informed journalists that, to date, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has registered 728 martyrs.

Previously, on 10 September, Salehuddin Ahmed, Adviser on Finance and Commerce, had announced that the memorial service for the student-led public uprising would take place on 14 September. He stated that the estimated cost of the ceremony would be Tk5 crore.

He also mentioned that the commemoration was planned to be held at the China-Bangladesh Friendship Conference Centre, with both domestic and international guests in attendance. He added that the Information Adviser would finalise the list of attendees for the event.

Earlier, on 9 September, Nahid Islam had announced that the government would organise a memorial service to honour all martyrs of the uprising on 14 September.

He had emphasised that the government would accord the highest honour to the families of the martyrs. Furthermore, he highlighted the importance of acknowledging pivotal events such as the "Bangla Blockade", "Complete Shutdown", and the "Long March to Dhaka", which had acted as catalysts during the mass movement.

Nahid Islam stated that the event would be designed to reflect the atmosphere of the July uprising, underscoring its significance.

The event will be spearheaded by Nahid Islam, while Mohammad Zahidul Haque, Assistant Professor at Jagannath University, has provided input on various aspects of the programme's design.

The meeting also saw the attendance of Dr Md Mushfiqur Rahman, secretary of Posts and Telecommunications, alongside other senior ministry officials.
