India has demonstrated itself to be inhuman and non-cooperative towards Bangladesh by opening a dam on a transboundary river without any prior notice, which has caused floods in Bangladesh, Information Adviser Nahid Islam said on Thursday (22 August).
Nahid made these remarks during a press briefing in front of the State Guest House Jamuna on Thursday, following a meeting of the interim government's advisory council.
Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan and Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan also spoke on various issues at the briefing.
"We hope that India will swiftly abandon such anti-people policies towards Bangladesh," said Nahid Islam. "The students and people of Bangladesh are outraged by India's actions."
Nahid Islam further emphasised the need for a collaborative solution between Bangladesh and India to protect the people of both nations from such natural disasters. He pointed out that the people of Bangladesh have long been advocating for a fair share of water resources.
The Information Adviser expressed hope that there would be no strain in Bangladesh-India relations and that the relationship between the two countries would be based on fairness and mutual respect.
In response, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs issued a press release today stating that the recent flood situation in Bangladesh's eastern border districts has caused concern, particularly the belief that it resulted from the opening of the Dumboor Dam gates in Tripura, India. The statement asserted that this perception is not accurate.
