A Dhaka court has granted a 7-day remand for Hasanul Haq Inu, President of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JASAD), in connection with the murder case of Shahjahan Ali, a shop employee in the capital’s New Market area.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ali Haidar passed the order following a hearing in the case.

Earlier, on Monday, Inu was arrested from the Uttara area of the capital by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). Hasanul Haq Inu, a former Information Minister, is a key leader of the Central 14-Party Alliance led by the Awami League. Previously, on 22 August, another prominent leader of the 14-Party Alliance, Rashed Khan Menon, President of the Workers Party of Bangladesh, was also arrested.

On 5 August, facing intense mass protests led by students and the public, Awami League President Sheikh Hasina resigned from her position as Prime Minister and left the country, marking the end of her 15-and-a-half-year rule. She is currently residing in India.

Following the fall of the government, several murder cases have been filed against Sheikh Hasina, along with former ministers, state ministers, and Awami League leaders and activists. Hasanul Haq Inu and Rashed Khan Menon are also named in murder cases. Additionally, charges of genocide have been filed against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and members of her cabinet in the International Crimes Tribunal.

Several ministers and state ministers of the ousted government have already been arrested in connection with these cases. These include Awami League Joint General Secretary and former Minister of Social Welfare Dipu Moni, former Law Minister Anisul Huq, former Prime Minister's Adviser Salman F Rahman, former Minister of Textiles and Jute Golam Dastagir Gazi, former Deputy Speaker Shamsul Haque Tuku, former State Minister for Information and Communication Technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak, and former Deputy Minister Arif Khan, among others.
