Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) is urging for stringent measures against the proliferation of online gambling and related money laundering, criticising the lack of enforcement despite directives from the apex court.

The organisation has called for the immediate restriction of gambling-related advertisements and the enforcement of the Gambling Prevention Act.

Dr Iftekharuzzaman, executive director of TIB, voiced his concerns, saying, "We are witnessing a surge in online gambling in the country. Exploiting legal loopholes for profit cannot be deemed responsible broadcasting."

Despite last year's High Court orders to block such advertisements, he highlighted that gambling promotions are visible online and on city billboards, sports jerseys, and more.

The issue is compounded by significant money laundering activities, with funds being channelled through mobile financial services, e-Banking, and cryptocurrencies. "Media reports and investigations show that even in rural areas, millions, especially youth, are addicted to online gambling," Dr Iftekharuzzaman added.

The rise in gambling has led to severe social issues, including addiction, suicides, and domestic conflicts.

Recently, a tragic incident involved a 35-year-old man from Thakurgaon who committed suicide after losing a significant amount in online betting.

TIB's statement stressed the need for a modern and robust legislative framework to combat these challenges. "The country still relies on a 157-year-old law to regulate gambling. The urgency for a stringent and contemporary gambling prevention law has long been apparent given the current landscape," Dr. Iftekharuzzaman explained.

In light of these concerns, TIB has called for a thorough review of the draft Gambling Prevention Act, 2023, in consultation with the ICT Division, the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit, the Information and Broadcast Ministry, human rights organisations, and other stakeholders.

They also demand a definitive prohibition on gambling-related advertisements and assertive action by law enforcement agencies to curb the spread of online gambling.
