The United States has asserted that the people of Bangladesh alone will determine the country's future, even as the South Asian nation grapples with a series of complex political and social challenges.

Speaking at a regular press briefing on 15 April, US State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce emphasised that it is the actions of Bangladesh’s citizens that will ultimately shape the nation's path forward.

Bruce’s comments came in response to a question regarding the issuance of an arrest warrant against Tulip Siddiq—British MP, former UK minister, and niece of former autocratic prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

She described the matter as one that falls under the jurisdiction of local Bangladeshi authorities.

The briefing also addressed growing concerns over Islamist extremism in Bangladesh.

A journalist cited multiple recent reports—including one published in The New York Times—highlighting a disturbing rise in radical activity under the interim administration led by Dr Muhammad Yunus. Protesters were said to have displayed images of Osama bin Laden and even Nazi symbols, with attacks reportedly targeting Western brands such as KFC and Coca-Cola amid antisemitic campaigns. Allegations have emerged that some advisers close to the interim government may be fuelling the unrest.

Responding to these claims, Bruce stated, “I’ve heard your concerns and appreciate them. Bangladesh is a significant country, facing unique challenges. We’ve had many discussions about this before—especially in response to questions from journalists here.”

She added, “Regarding the arrest warrant against British MP Tulip Siddiq, this was issued by a Bangladeshi court. Matters like this, and the broader issues including the protests you mentioned, are primarily for the Bangladeshi authorities. Our engagement and dialogue with them remain vital.”

Bruce reiterated Washington’s position with a measured firmness, saying, “The future of Bangladesh will be decided by its people. As noted in several reports, the country is facing serious challenges. Elections are extremely important—this is not something to be taken lightly.”

She further stressed the significance of democratic values and accountability, stating, “Democracy matters. The way people act will determine how they address these problems. Over the last two decades, we have seen how poor choices can devastate lives. Now, many countries—including Bangladesh—are at a crossroads, and the choice of path lies with them.”
