A United States delegation, led by Deputy Assistant Secretaries Nicole A Chulick and Andrew Herrup, has extended its support for the reform agenda of Bangladesh’s caretaker government.

The assurance came on Thursday (17 April) during a meeting with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at the state guesthouse, Jamuna, in Dhaka. The discussion also touched on issues of regional peace, security, and development.

Bangladesh’s National Security Adviser, Dr Khalilur Rahman, and the US Embassy’s Chargé d’Affaires in Dhaka, Tracey Ann Jacobson, were also present at the meeting.

US officials expressed deep gratitude to Bangladesh for its generosity in hosting 1.2 million Rohingya refugees. They also thanked Chief Adviser Yunus for his leadership in addressing the crisis.

In turn, Professor Yunus described Myanmar’s identification of 180,000 Rohingyas as eligible for repatriation to Rakhine as a “significant step forward”.

Nicole A Chulick praised Yunus’s approach to viewing the Rohingya issue not in isolation, but as part of a broader engagement with Myanmar, describing his perspective as “commendable”.

The US delegation also acknowledged the chief adviser’s broader vision for enhancing regional cooperation, connectivity, and people-to-people ties.

Professor Yunus reaffirmed the caretaker government’s commitment to working closely with the Trump administration across all areas of bilateral relations.

He thanked US President Donald Trump for resuming humanitarian aid for the Rohingya and for granting a 90-day suspension on retaliatory tariffs.

“We continue to support his trade agenda,” Yunus stated.
