BNP requests India to reconsider Waqf law

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) today requested the Indian government to reconsider the Waqf law which will infringe on the rights of India's Muslim-minority community.
 
BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed made the appeal on behalf of his party in a press conference held at the Gulshan office of the BNP Chairperson here. 
 
“India is one of the greatest democratic countries. We hope that Indian government as the guardian of the state will reconsider the law to protect the rights of all the religious faiths. We believe that such initiative will play a historic role to maintain regional religious harmony,” he said.  
  
An act named the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 was passed in the Indian parliament a few days back. After assessing different sections of the act, we find that there is an attempt to contravene on the rights of India's Muslim-minority community, he also said.  
 
The law is also discriminatory to Muslims, he added.
 
Describing Waqf as an ancient practice to donate something in Islam, the senior BNP leader said through it (Waqf), an individual permanently donates land or land like something for religious or public welfare.
 
“Such kind of Waqf properties can’t be sold or transferred to others,” he said.  
 
Salahuddin said the law is against the main spirit of the Waqf system in the Islami law referring to opinions of All India Muslim Personal Law Board like organisations. 
 
As per their opinions, the Waqf Board of Directors should be formed with Muslims and they considered it as direct intervention on the rights of the Muslims, he said.
