Professor Muhammad Yunus, chief adviser to Bangladesh’s interim government, is attending the sixth BIMSTEC Summit, currently being held in Bangkok, Thailand.
His participation was announced via the official Facebook page of the chief adviser.
Yunus arrived in the Thai capital on Thursday morning to join leaders from the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC), as Bangladesh prepares to assume the bloc's chairmanship.
Later today, Friday, Yunus is scheduled to meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the first time since assuming his interim role. The meeting is set to take place at the Shangri-La Hotel in Bangkok, where the summit is being held.
According to a senior source within the interim government, the conversation between the two leaders is expected to be brief—lasting under thirty minutes—and will likely occur sometime after midday local time in a designated area reserved for high-level talks.
The source further revealed that Yunus and Modi met informally at a state banquet held on Thursday evening in honour of BIMSTEC leaders. The two dignitaries were seated at the same table, where they exchanged pleasantries.
Bangladesh is poised to take over the BIMSTEC chairmanship at the conclusion of the summit.
