Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has directed law enforcement agencies to adopt a stringent stance against sexual violence and harassment, underscoring the government’s commitment to ensuring justice for victims.
He issued the directive during a visit to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka on Sunday (9 March) morning, where he met the eight-year-old girl from Magura who was subjected to rape and an attempted murder.
The adviser inquired about her medical condition and instructed hospital authorities to provide the highest standard of treatment.
Senior officials of the hospital were present during the visit.
Addressing the case, Jahangir Alam Chowdhury stated that a case had been filed with Magura Sadar Police Station, naming four individuals as accused, all of whom have been arrested.
He assured that the Home Ministry remains resolute in ensuring that the perpetrators do not evade justice.
"I have instructed law enforcement agencies to take a firm position against sexual violence and harassment. A comprehensive list of all reported cases of violence against women has been compiled, and I have directed authorities to expedite investigations and submit reports to the courts without delay," he said.
The adviser reiterated that all recent rape cases would be met with swift and stringent legal action.
"The perpetrators will face the full force of the law. Women must be able to carry out their duties, both at home and outside, without fear or hindrance. Anyone attempting to obstruct their safety or engage in violence will be brought under the purview of the law, with no exceptions," he affirmed.
Jahangir Alam Chowdhury also urged society to remain vigilant and proactive against gender-based violence, emphasising the importance of fostering family, social, and moral values to prevent such crimes.
On Thursday afternoon, upon learning of the incident, he personally reached out to the child's mother, assuring her of the government's commitment to ensuring the best possible medical care for the victim.
The child was transferred to CMH from Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Saturday for advanced treatment.
