The Ministry of Home Affairs has taken a series of significant decisions to enhance law and order across the nation, with regular monitoring to ensure their effective implementation.
These measures, aimed at reinforcing security and combating criminal activities, were disclosed in a press release issued by the ministry’s Public Relations Division on Sunday (2 March).
Key initiatives undertaken by the ministry include:
1. A special nationwide operation, launched on 8 February, targeting identified criminals, terrorists, drug traffickers, and smugglers.
2. Workshops conducted across the country, involving police, administrative officers, the judiciary, and public prosecutors, to emphasise human rights and environmental concerns while enforcing the law in the changed national landscape.
3. Law enforcement officials, including unit heads, deputy police commissioners, field-level army brigade commanders, and other senior officers, instructed to brief the media on all significant decisions and actions.
4. Increased presence of security checkpoints at critical locations in the capital, along with intensified patrols in crime-prone areas. Joint operations are being carried out by the army, police units, and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in targeted zones.
5. Deployment of additional patrol units from the Navy and Coast Guard alongside regular police patrols on key roads in the capital.
6. Combined operations against muggers, robbers, juvenile gangs, and other criminal groups, leading to multiple arrests.
7. Law enforcement agencies directed to update lists of known criminals at the police station level and take swift action against them.
8. Reinforced patrols in areas surrounding Dhaka, including Tongi, Basila, Keraniganj, and Munshiganj.
9. Procurement of motorcycles for personnel from Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), BGB, Ansar, and the Bangladesh Coast Guard, enabling rapid response and patrolling in narrow alleys to apprehend criminals effectively.
10. Implementation of strategies to counter misinformation, rumours, and propaganda by disseminating factual information.
11. Senior officials, including the Home Affairs Adviser, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser, Home Secretary, Inspector General of Police (IGP), DMP Commissioner, and other law enforcement heads, conducting surprise visits to police stations, checkpoints, and patrol zones during late-night and early-morning hours for inspection and oversight.
12. The Home Affairs Adviser has held meetings with divisional administrative officers nationwide, providing necessary directives to law enforcement agencies.
13. Ministry officials assigned to routinely monitor night-time activities of security checkpoints and patrol teams established under the joint forces initiative in the Dhaka Metropolitan area.
14. Formation of monitoring committees at district and metropolitan levels to scrutinise criminal cases, ensuring the identification of genuine offenders while protecting innocent individuals from legal harassment.
15. Ongoing monitoring of cases related to the martyrs of the July Revolution to ensure the identification and prosecution of actual perpetrators, thus guaranteeing justice.
16. Every law-and-order incident is being meticulously reviewed by the Home Ministry, with appropriate actions taken as required.
These measures underscore the government’s commitment to ensuring stability, enhancing security, and fostering a safer environment through rigorous enforcement and strategic coordination among various agencies.
