On 7 February 1991, the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) executed a bold and calculated mortar attack on 10 Downing Street, the official residence of the British Prime Minister, during an active cabinet meeting.

The assailants fired three homemade mortar shells from a parked van on Whitehall, with one projectile exploding in the garden, dangerously close to the cabinet room where Prime Minister John Major and his senior ministers were gathered.

Although Major and his cabinet narrowly escaped harm, the blast injured four individuals and caused significant damage to the historic building.

The attack, a stark reminder of the IRA’s campaign against British authority, underscored the persistent threat of domestic terrorism amid the tumultuous backdrop of The Troubles.
