On 2 April 1513, Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León became the first known European to reach Florida, claiming the land for Spain.

Arriving during his search for new territories and possibly the mythical Fountain of Youth, he named the region "La Florida" in honour of Spain’s Easter celebration, Pascua Florida.

His landing marked the beginning of Spanish exploration and colonisation in what would later become the southeastern United States.
