Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus will hold a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 4 April in Bangkok, on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC summit.

India responded positively on Tuesday (1 April) to Bangladesh’s diplomatic note proposing the meeting, a government source told media.

The discussion between the two leaders is expected to follow a “sofa format,” though the exact timing remains undisclosed.

"We have requested for the meeting officially. We have reasonable grounds to remain hopeful. There is a high possibility to see the meeting," High Representative to the Chief Adviser Khalilur Rahman told reporters at the Foreign Service Academy during a briefing on Wednesday (2 April).

Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam and Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder were also present at the media briefing.

Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary Jashim Uddin, currently in Bangkok, expressed optimism about the talks, noting that Bangladesh had formally suggested the bilateral meeting last month.

Yunus, leading Bangladesh’s interim government, will depart for Bangkok on 3 April to attend the sixth BIMSTEC summit, where South Asian leaders will convene.

He will be accompanied by Foreign Affairs Adviser Touhid Hossain and Foreign Secretary Jashim Uddin.
