On 20 March 1800, Italian scientist Alessandro Volta announced his groundbreaking invention of the electric battery in a letter to Joseph Banks, president of the Royal Society of London.

This "voltaic pile," consisting of stacked zinc and copper discs separated by brine-soaked cloth, became the first device capable of generating a steady electric current.

Volta’s discovery not only validated earlier theories on electricity but also laid the foundation for modern electrical science and technology.

His name lives on in the unit of electric potential, the volt, a testament to his transformative contributions to human progress.
