Dengue death toll rises to 556 with 5 new fatalities

The death toll from dengue fever in Bangladesh has reached 556, following the report of five more deaths in the last 24 hours, until Wednesday morning.

The recent fatalities include two from Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), two from Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), and one from Khulna Division.

The country has also seen a rise in hospitalisations, with 274 new dengue patients admitted. Of these, 38 patients were admitted under the Dhaka North City Corporation, while 40 were hospitalised in Dhaka South City Corporation.

As of now, 1,348 dengue patients are receiving treatment in hospitals nationwide. Since the beginning of the year, a total of 99,569 cases have been reported.

Dengue had claimed the lives of 1,705 people in 2023, marking the deadliest year on record. Last year, the country saw 321,179 reported dengue cases, with 318,749 recoveries, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
