The dengue outbreak in Bangladesh continues to claim lives, with four more fatalities reported in the 24 hours till Friday morning, bringing the death toll for the year to 545, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
All the recent deaths occurred within the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), the DGHS confirmed.
During the same period, 241 new dengue patients were admitted to hospitals, further straining the healthcare system. Of these, 41 were hospitalized in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and 46 in Dhaka South City Corporation.
Currently, 1,782 dengue patients are receiving treatment in hospitals nationwide. Since the beginning of the year, Bangladesh has recorded a total of 98,188 dengue cases.
Last year, dengue caused an unprecedented 1,705 deaths, making it the deadliest year on record. In 2023, the country reported 321,179 dengue cases, with 318,749 recoveries, as per DGHS data.
Despite efforts to curb the spread of the mosquito-borne disease, the ongoing outbreak highlights the need for enhanced measures and public awareness to prevent further losses.
