Home Affairs Adviser Lt. Gen (Retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has stated that India, not Bangladesh, should consider deploying UN peacekeeping forces to address its internal issues.

His remarks came on Thursday (5 December) following the inauguration of International Volunteer Day 2024 at the Fire Service and Civil Defence Multipurpose Training Ground in Purbachal, Narayanganj.

Responding to questions from journalists after the event, Chowdhury commented on the recent appeal by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who, during a question-and-answer session at the winter session of the Indian Legislative Assembly on 2 December, called for the deployment of UN peacekeepers in Bangladesh if necessary.

Banerjee reportedly sought the personal intervention of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in this regard.

Chowdhury emphasised that the call for national unity in Bangladesh is already yielding positive outcomes in countering conspiracies and maintaining law and order.

Addressing the journalists, he stated, "There is no tension at the border. However, the propaganda being spread by India about Bangladesh will be addressed collectively by our nation."

His comments underscore Bangladesh’s stance on the issue amidst rising concerns over its portrayal in neighbouring India.
