At least two workers were shot during a clash in Dhaka’s Kachukhet area as RMG workers protested over unpaid wages. Amid the agitation, demonstrators set fire to an army vehicle and a police minibus.
The incident occurred around 10am on Thursday (31 October), said Fire Service Duty Officer Lima Khanom,
“There has been a fire incident involving an army vehicle and a police minibus in Kachukhet. The fire service is actively working to douse the flames," she added.
According to initial reports, an outsider allegedly initiated the blaze during the protest, which was organised by workers of Diana Garments, who had taken to the streets to demand their outstanding wages and allowances.
Clashes intensified when some protesters began hurling bricks at the security personnel.
Amid the escalating chaos, the protesters reportedly set fire to the army and police vehicles.
Eyewitnesses stated that workers from Diana Garments blocked the Mirpur 14-Kachukhet road while protesting, attempting to obstruct traffic.
Efforts by police and army personnel to calm the protesters were met with further resistance, leading to stone-throwing from the demonstrators.
In response, the police resorted to baton charges to disperse the crowd.
As tensions escalated, the protesters damaged and ignited the vehicles belonging to the army and police.
The army took a firm stance to control the situation, restricting traffic in the area.
The situation remains tense as law enforcement maintains a heightened presence to prevent further incidents.
