Workers at a garment factory in Gazipur have initiated protests, demanding four months' worth of unpaid wages.

Employees of Niagara Textile Limited, located at Chandra Trimore in the Kaliakair Upazila of the district, refrained from joining work and called for a demonstration at around 8:30am on Monday (7 October).

During the protest, the workers attempted to involve labourers from nearby factories as well.

However, members of the army and other law enforcement agencies have been deployed to the scene to maintain control.

According to the workers, they have not received their wages for the past four months.

Previously, after several protests and road blockades, the factory was shut down.

Despite assurances from the factory authorities, facilitated through government intervention, the payment of the due wages has yet to materialise.

The workers reported informing the management about their grievances on multiple occasions, but no action has been taken.

Soraiya Khatun, Mahmudul Azim, and Zakir Hossain, workers of the factory, told Bangladesh First, "We are now four months behind on our wages. We are barely surviving with our families. It is already the 7th of this month, and yet we haven't received any payment. We had no choice but to take to the streets."

In response to the situation, Superintendent of Police Sarwar Alam from the Gazipur Industrial Police stated, "The workers of Niagara Textile Limited in Chandra are staging a sit-in inside the factory, having ceased their work. We are attempting to mediate between the workers and the management to resolve the issue."
