BNP and Islami Andolon Bangladesh on Monday (27 January) announced a ten-point joint resolution following a high-level meeting between delegations led by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Islami Andolon Bangladesh chief Pir Saheb Chormonai.
The discussions underscored the need for national unity to establish a sovereign, democratic welfare state free from external dominance, corruption, and political suppression.
Among the key resolutions, both parties committed to eradicating corruption, terrorism, and money laundering through swift and exemplary legal action. They also stressed the importance of safeguarding voting rights and broader human rights through national consensus.
The opposition leaders called for urgent electoral reforms, ensuring a free, fair, and credible election process after implementing essential structural changes.
Addressing economic concerns, they pledged to curb rising commodity prices and restore law and order while securing the rights of marginalised communities.
A significant aspect of the agreement was a united stance against what they termed "Awami fascism."
The parties resolved to work collectively towards national reconstruction while refraining from publicly criticising one another.
Additionally, they vowed to prevent any future return of authoritarian rule akin to that of the Awami League.
The resolution also affirmed that no policies contradicting Islamic Shariah would be adopted, and leaders would refrain from making any statements against Islam.
Lastly, the parties demanded the immediate removal of pro-Awami League elements still entrenched within the administration.
This coalition signals a strategic shift in Bangladesh’s political landscape, potentially reshaping the opposition’s approach in the coming months.
