Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasiruddin said that the European Union (EU) has extended its full support for the organisation of upcoming elections in Bangladesh, pledging assistance to ensure the electoral process remains democratic and transparent.
He further assured that all necessary preparations would be undertaken to hold a fair and free election.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with the EU delegation at the Election Commission (EC) headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka, on Tuesday (28 January), the CEC noted that any interference which could undermine the autonomy of the Election Commission would be firmly opposed.
He emphasised the EU's recognition of the importance of maintaining the independence of the EC and their commitment to reforms.
However, he pointed out that the EU had expressed concerns about the limited timeframe for implementing these reforms.
EU Ambassador Michael Miller stated that discussions had centred on the upcoming national parliamentary elections.
He assured that the EU would provide full cooperation to Bangladesh to ensure the conduct of elections in line with international standards.
