The European Union (EU) has reaffirmed its commitment to assisting Bangladesh in conducting elections that adhere to international standards, according to EU Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller
On Tuesday (28 January), Miller met with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin to discuss the progress of election preparations.
Their discussions also covered the 150 proposals put forward by the Electoral System Reform Commission.
Following the meeting, the EU envoy stated that deliberations were held on the upcoming elections. The CEC, in turn, noted that the EU had assured full cooperation in Bangladesh’s democratic journey and that every effort would be made to ensure a free and fair electoral process.
He also acknowledged that the EU had stressed the importance of reforms while pointing out that the timeline for implementing them had been limited.
Nasir Uddin further stated that concerns had been raised regarding any measures that could potentially undermine the independence of the Election Commission.
Both parties agreed on the necessity of preserving the commission’s autonomy.
Election Commission has conveyed to the EU that it is working towards restoring public confidence through the electoral process.
