Violent clashes broke out between demonstrators and members of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in the Sadarghat area of Old Dhaka.

The confrontations began at around 11am on Sunday (4 August).

It soon spread through the alleys of Sadarghat, Banglabazar, Patuatuli, Raishaheb Bazar, and the court precincts, resulting in a chaotic and volatile situation.

Earlier in the morning, groups of protesters began gathering at Raishaheb Bazar and Tantibazar intersections in Old Dhaka.

In support of the demonstrators, over a hundred BNP-aligned lawyers also staged a protest march at the Dhaka Lower Court premises.

Simultaneously, BCL activists took positions in the area. The situation intensified when BCL leaders and activists started hurling bricks at the protesters. In retaliation, the demonstrators set fire to a police vehicle at the Raishaheb Bazar intersection.

In response to the escalating violence, businesses in Tantibazar, Islampur, and surrounding areas have shuttered, and all vehicular movement has ceased.

This unrest follows the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement's call for the government's resignation on Saturday (3 August).
