The rainy season is arriving earlier than usual this year, with the Southwest Monsoon—responsible for the majority of Bangladesh's annual rainfall—already entering the country over the past few days.

However, these winds have not yet spread across the entire country. Afroza Sultana, assistant meteorologist at the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, said the rain-laden winds are expected to cover the whole country within the next three to four days.

She said the southwest monsoon winds have currently advanced to the central regions of Bangladesh, and conditions are favorable for further advancement. It is anticipated that these winds will spread nationwide within the next three to four days, she added.

The meteorologist also added that on Saturday, many places in the Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, and Sylhet divisions, some areas in the Chattogram division, and isolated spots in the Khulna and Barishal divisions may experience temporary gusty winds with rain or thundershowers.

Additionally, moderate to heavy rainfall is likely in some areas of the Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, and Sylhet divisions, she added.

The day temperatures across the country may slightly decrease, while night temperatures are expected to remain almost unchanged, she said.

Afroza Sultana also mentioned that with the monsoon spreading across the country, the likelihood of heatwaves is reduced.

However, mild heatwaves may still occur in areas that do not receive rain. For instance, there is a lower probability of heatwaves in the Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions, whereas some parts of the Khulna, Barishal, and Dhaka divisions may experience mild heatwaves.

Over the past 24 hours, Chattogram recorded the highest rainfall in the country, with 26 millimeters.
