Model Meghna Alam has been formally shown arrested in a case alleging her involvement in defrauding foreign diplomats by luring them into romantic entanglements with attractive young women.
On 17 April, Metropolitan Magistrate Masum Mia granted the prosecution’s request to show her arrested in the case filed with Dhanmondi police station.
Earlier that morning, Meghna was produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court in Dhaka.
The investigating officer of the Dhanmondi police filed an application requesting her formal arrest in connection with the fraud case. The state was represented by the Metropolitan Public Prosecutor, who supported the plea.
After the hearing, Magistrate Masum Mia approved the request. The case alleges that a group used young women to entrap foreign ambassadors and diplomats, subsequently deceiving them through various schemes.
It may be recalled that Meghna Alam was initially detained by detectives of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police from her residence in Bashundhara on the night of 9 April.
Acting on an order from the Ministry of Home Affairs, the court on 10 April authorised her detention under the Special Powers Act for 30 days. She remains in custody.
