Model Meghla Alam has been arrested on charges of conspiring to destabilise the state, including attempts to damage international relations by spreading falsehoods about high-profile individuals and inflicting economic harm upon the country, said the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
"Meghna Alam was taken into protective custody following all due legal procedures," said DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media) Muhammad Talebur Rahman during a briefing to the press on Friday (11 April).
He denied allegations of abduction and affirmed that Alam retains the right to seek legal redress.
On Wednesday evening, members of the Detective Branch of DMP apprehended Meghna Alam from the Bashundhara area of the capital.
She was presented before the court on Thursday, where Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah ordered her detention at Dhaka Central Jail for 30 days.
The detention has been enacted under Section 3(1) of the Special Powers Act of 1974, citing a perceived threat to public safety and law and order.
Authorities stated the measure was taken under Section 2(f) of the same Act to prevent harmful activities against public security, with official sanction from the competent authority.
Meghna rose to national prominence on 5 October 2020 after winning the "Miss Earth Bangladesh" title.
She was recognised for promoting plastic recycling and championing female entrepreneurship aimed at economic self-reliance.
Under the country’s detention laws, the government reserves the right to detain any individual without formal trial for a stipulated period if it deems it necessary to safeguard public safety, national security, or law and order.
