Foreign ministers of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) have signed an agreement aimed at facilitating maritime transport cooperation.
The deal was inked on Thursday (3 April) in Bangkok, ahead of the 20th ministerial meeting of the regional bloc.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the BIMSTEC Maritime Transport Cooperation Agreement as a crucial step towards strengthening regional connectivity.
On the second day of the BIMSTEC summit, Foreign Affairs Adviser Touhid Hossain attended the ministerial meeting, where he raised the issue of the 1.2 million Rohingya refugees currently sheltered in Bangladesh.
He emphasised the need for Myanmar to create a conducive environment for the safe and dignified repatriation of forcibly displaced Rohingya, ensuring their rights and security upon return.
