The Police Headquarters has confirmed that Hizbut Tahrir remains a banned organisation under Bangladeshi law, with any activities associated with it being punishable offences.

The clarification was issued through a brief message to the media on Friday (7 March).

The statement follows a declaration by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Thursday (6 March) where it was made clear that Hizbut Tahrir was officially banned by the government on 22 October 2009, citing threats to public safety.

According to the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2009, any gathering, procession, distribution of posters, leaflets, or other forms of propaganda by any banned organisation is a criminal act.

The DMP emphasised that it would take necessary legal measures against any individuals or groups attempting to organise meetings or engage in promotional activities on behalf of Hizbut Tahrir or any other banned organisation.

In a related development, three members of Hizbut Tahrir were arrested by the Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit on Thursday evening.

The individuals, aged 40, 40, and 21, were apprehended in the Uttara West Police Station area of the capital.

They have been identified as Monirul Islam, Mohtasin Billah, and Mahmudul Hasan.
