Law enforcement agencies must complete the investigation of rape cases within 15 days and ensure that trials are concluded within 90 days, Law Adviser Asif Nazrul stated.

Speaking at a press briefing at the secretariat on Sunday (9 March), he announced that the government is set to amend relevant laws to accelerate the judicial process for rape cases.

Condemning the recent rape of a child in Magura, he declared that perpetrators of such crimes would find no place in Bangladesh.

"All those accused in the Magura case have already been arrested. The government is committed to ensuring the maximum punishment for them through due legal process," he asserted, reaffirming a stance of zero tolerance against rape.

"Our position against violence towards women and children, including rape, is unequivocal. I have instructed law enforcement agencies to take a firm stand against all forms of gender-based violence. They must complete investigations promptly and submit reports to the court, ensuring that all instances of violence against women are accounted for," he said.

Asif Nazrul emphasised that perpetrators would face severe punishment, stating, "Women must be able to carry out their responsibilities—both at home and in public—without fear. Anyone attempting to hinder this through violence will be brought to justice with no leniency."

He also stressed the need for social awareness campaigns alongside legal actions to combat gender-based violence effectively.

The interim government is set to maintain heightened vigilance to prevent delays in the investigation and trial process, with all relevant ministries—including the Ministry of Law and the Ministry of Home Affairs—actively monitoring developments.

Detailing the proposed legal amendments, Asif Nazrul said, "Previously, if an investigating officer failed to complete an inquiry into a case of violence against women within 30 days, they were replaced. This approach will be revised. The designated officer must now conclude investigations within 15 days."

Additionally, the trial duration for rape cases is being halved.

"All rape cases must be completed within 90 days. Even if a trial extends beyond this period, the accused will not be eligible for bail on this ground," he explained.

The interim government is in the final stages of planning further measures to combat rape and violence against women, with necessary legal amendments expected to be introduced soon.
