Bangladesh has made notable progress in the latest Global Terrorism Index (GTI), moving up three places from last year.
The country now ranks 35th in the 2025 edition of the index, an improvement from its previous position at 32nd, reflecting a decline in the impact of terrorism.
The report, published on Wednesday (5 March) by the Sydney-based Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), highlights global trends and patterns of terrorism, based on data spanning five years.
Since 2012, the IEP has been annually assessing the state of terrorism worldwide, assigning scores from 0 to 10, where 0 indicates no terrorism impact and 10 signifies the highest level of terrorist activity.
In the 12th edition of the index, Bangladesh has received a score of 3.03, indicating a relatively low impact of terrorism compared to regional counterparts.
The report notes that Bangladesh experienced a lesser degree of terrorist activity in 2024 than India, Pakistan, and the South Asian regional average.
The GTI 2025 ranks 163 countries, grouping them into 100 positions based on terrorism-related incidents, fatalities, injuries, and hostage situations.
While Bangladesh has shown progress, the broader South Asian region continues to grapple with terrorism, with Pakistan witnessing a significant surge in terrorist activities.
The report identifies Pakistan as the most terrorism-affected country in South Asia, with a score of 8.374, placing it second globally.
Afghanistan follows closely, securing the third position in the index with a score of 7.262. India, with a score of 6.411, ranks 14th in the global index.
The IEP attributes the overall improvement in South Asia’s ranking to a reduction in terrorist incidents in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.
However, Afghanistan and Pakistan remain among the top ten countries most affected by terrorism worldwide.
Despite the regional challenges, Bangladesh’s upward movement in the GTI suggests a continued decline in terrorist activities, reinforcing its progress in counterterrorism measures.
