Nahid Islam has tendered his resignation as the information adviser to the interim government, reportedly to facilitate the formation of a new political party.

Sources from the Chief Adviser’s Office confirmed the development on Tuesday (25 February) afternoon.

Speculation regarding Islam’s leadership in a forthcoming political entity had been circulating for days. He himself had hinted at his imminent departure on multiple occasions, stating his intent to join a new party upon resignation.

With his exit now formalised, the path appears clear for the party’s official launch, scheduled for Friday, spearheaded by student leaders.

A press conference on Manik Mia Avenue in the capital will mark the party’s unveiling, orchestrated by the National Citizens’ Committee and the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

While the party’s name remains undisclosed, Islam is poised to assume leadership, with Akhtar Hossain serving as Member Secretary.

Hasnat Abdullah, Convener of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, and Sarjis Alam, chief organiser of the Jaiya Nagorik Committee, are expected to be prominent spokespersons and key organisers.

Other senior figures anticipated to hold pivotal roles include Nasiruddin Patwary, convener of the Jatiya Nagorik Committee; joint conveners Ali Ahsan Junaid and Sarwar Tushar; spokesperson Samanta Sharmin; and joint conveners Tasnim Zara and Ariful Islam Adib.

Additionally, Arif Sohel, member secretary of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, alongside its chief organiser Abdul Hannan Masud, is likely to assume leadership roles within the party.
