Over 1.4 million taxpayers have filed income tax returns online this fiscal year, while more than 1.8 million have registered for the National Board of Revenue’s (NBR) e-return system, according to a recent NBR press release.

The online filing portal has received an overwhelming response from the public.

The NBR announced that the online filing service will remain operational throughout the year, even after the Income Tax Day deadline on 16 February.

However, taxpayers filing returns after the deadline will not be eligible for investment tax rebates or exemptions under Section 76 of the Income Tax Act, 2023. In addition, a 2% monthly penalty, applicable for up to 24 months on any unpaid taxes, will be enforced as per Section 174 of the Act.

In a related development, Bangladesh Bank has eased its loan rescheduling policy for raw jute exporters, offering further support to the sector.

The NBR expressed its gratitude to taxpayers for embracing digital services and encouraged continued use of online platforms for filing returns and obtaining income tax certificates.
