JnU student's suicide: Accused proctor suspended, classmate expelled

The Jagannath University (JnU) authorities have suspended the accused proctor of the university temporarily over the suicidal incident of Fairuz Abantika, a law department student.

Amman Siddiqui, the classmate of Fairuz Abantika, has also been expelled from the university following allegation made by Abantika posted on the social media.

Meanwhile, a 5-member investigation committee has been formed to probe into the incident.

JnU Proctor Jahangir Hossain confirmed the developments to Barta24.com.

He said, “We have learned the matter. The dead student accused one of our Proctoral Team members as responsible for her death. The Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor gave verbal instructions to suspend him temporarily. Further action will be taken subject to investigation in the legal process.”

He also said that a 5-member committee has been formed with the Dean of the Faculty of Law Professor Dr. S.M. Masum Billah as convener and Deputy Registrar of JnU Himadri Shekhar as member secretary. The members of the committee are the Science Faculty Dean Dr. Md. Shahjahan, Music Department Chairman Dr. Jhumur Ahmed, JnU Teachers’ Association President and also Marketing Department Professor Zakir Hossain.

Fairuz Abantika is a student of the 2017-18 academic year of Law Department of JnU. She first posted on Facebook around 9:30 pm on Friday (15 March). Then she committed suicide by hanging himself. Later, when she was immediately rescued and taken to the district headquarters hospital, the on duty doctors declared her dead.
